The American Tushball Association record
for the most people in one game of tushball was shattered at camp
this session. The previous record had also been set by Timberlane in
1978 with 133 people. The camp had also tried for the record two
years ago but failed in the attempt. First-up this year was
ex-assistant director Hank Schwartz. Next came his wife, who was
followed up by such old-timers as Bob Gassel, John Marks, and Jon
'Pud' Heller, who won the competition last year.
Surprisingly, Pudder was also the second one out this year, right
after Mrs. Schwartz.
Directed by Barry Boom-Boom Schulman, the game was run
very smoothly, although complications did develop when it seemed like
there would not be enough people to set the record. The game was held
up as number 132 waited patiently for more people to be found.
Finally, nurse Holly Hughes was dragged out of the infirmary, along
with three kitchen girls. The record-breaker was player number 134,
Scott Seideman, followed by Holly. Number 136 was kitchen girl Nancy
Berkhahn, who ended the count and officially set the record for Camp
Timberlane at 136!
The game then continued with Hank Schwartz serving again, and
dwindled down to ten people 45 minutes later. These were Gary
Winston, Bill Lipman, Brian Doner, David Stern, Brian Schlossberg,
Andy Levin, Drew Sterling, Rich Greenwald, and ended up with a
showdown between Martin Lynch (picked as favorite) and camper John
Forsyte. The others were eliminated in the order as they appeared
above.
Lynch served, returned with a low shot from Forsyte, long from Lynch,
short, long, high, long, high, high, high, and was returned with a
long shot from Forsyte that turned out to be too long and went over
the roof. Lynch won the game.
