Camp Timberlane has an activity that
definitely does not receive all the involvement and recognition it
deserves. This sensational sport is scuba diving, and is enjoyed by
only about 15 kids each sign-up.
In my opinion, too few people ever experience the thrill of this
sport. Certainly, there may be some with a phobia about diving,
however, the feeling of safety when loaded down with all of
ones gear, should overshadow any fears that may have arisen.
Whether in the ocean or in Lake Towanda, scuba diving is literally
another world. The calmness, full of living creatures, is
awesome.
Scuba diving allows one to stay underwater, and breathe, for periods
of time up to forty-five minutes on one tank of air.
We cannot overlook the dangers of the sport as well. These range from
getting the bends by surfacing too quickly to
encountering some unpleasant animals while diving. Although, through
proper instruction, the safety and excitement of the activity can be
learned.
This instruction is conducted at Camp Timberlane. Under the
leadership of senior counselor Bill Bauman, assistant Greg Schatten
helps to teach the class. If you are interested in opening up a new
world for yourself, simply talk to Greg or Bill.
