One day each session is awaited with
anticipation like no other. In first session this is United Nations
Day, followed by Pow Wow Day second session. Each is held in the last
week of the session, and consists of a day set aside for fierce
competitions between four teams. The entire camp is divided up into
these teams, which have approximately three days to plan songs,
cheers, and an entrance for the opening ceremonies of the day.
The history of these days goes back to 1960. Harold borrowed and
revised the idea of all-camp sports days after seeing "color wars" at
other camps. However, these lasted a full week, which the old
H thought was way too long to split up the camp.
In many opening ceremonies, the staff members chosen for a team play
a large part. For instance, Jim Goldsteins van has been used in
both of 1979s days of competition; and Steve Grotz printed up 8
x 10 glossy photos of the senior, intermediate, and junior captains
of the team he was on in 1978.
Pow Wow Day contains 35 events while U.N. Day has 49. This is usually
due to the trend of a larger enrollment first session.
Is is tradition that the captain of a winning team return the
following year, in an attempt to capture the title a second time.
This has been done only twice, by John Marks (1977, 1978) and Rick
Kagen (1975, 1976). Both returned for a third time, but were
unsuccessful in trying.
The excitement and spirit connected with the days preceeding United
Nations and Pow Wow days are unsurpassed by anything at Timberlane,
which is why they are so popular with camper and staff alike.
As this paper was going to the press, teams for this sessions
United Nations Day were already formulating their strategies.
Although we will not be able to report the outcome, there are some
facts that can be told now. For the first tie in the history of Camp
Timberlane, a woman was chosen to lead a U.N. team. Nancy Hiken will
be the advisor of the nation of Bermuda, against Jeff Mossler of
Chad, Bill Fried of Atlantis, and Grant Linsky of the Vatican
City.
The captains of Atlantis are Billy Clark, senior; Steve Rice,
intermediate; and Ronnie Turk, junior. Leading Bermuda with Nancy are
Andy Levin, senior; David Susman, intermediate; and Jon David,
junior. For Chad its Brad Burde, senior; Bill Strauss,
intermediate; and Mike Kanovitz, junior. Finally, with Grant are Dan
Buring, senior; Steve Koby, intermediate; and Scott Robinowitz,
junior.
