Camp Timberlane has always had a good
reputation for its socials. Master Jim Goldstein was heard to say,
impartially, Theyre the best in the Northwoods!
Most camps in the area have simply a turntable, few records, and a
meek amplifier, to say the least. Timberlane boasts 600 watts of
power, controlled through a Dynaco amp., two turntables, a
computer-controlled cassette deck, an audio mixer, and a fully
equipped light board, a creation of Jim Goldstein Productions,
Inc.
The board is a conglomeration of color organs, a chase motor,
dimmers, hand-controlled chase sequences, and indicator lights for
everything above. The four-foot high structure is made of sheet
metal, and feeds out electrical wire to the lights and strobe units
it controls. Also not mentioned is a mirrored ball, which is
connected to the lodge ceiling, and is controlled from the Goldie
machine. Two short range spotlights are aimed at either sides of the
ball, creating a rotating star pattern on the floor below.
The hours put into assembling this machinery, and setting it up for
each social are well appreciated through the many compliments Jim and
the camp receive.
This year we have had four socials. Two with Chippewa Ranch Camp, one
with Camp Agawak, and a special one with Camp Otahnagon. The social
with Otahnagon began after lunch and went on until the end of the
night. During the afternoon the girls and the boys participated in
activities together and ate dinner together. Later that night the
dance took place. As is usual for socials the campers were split up
between the two camps. During this particular occasion the younger
campers were at Otahnagon while the older ones were here at
Timberlane.
