The Return of the Mad Englishman
By Rob Schiller

In early June, Timber staff from all over the country began migrating to the Northwoods of Wisconsin in a quest to support a man we have all grown to love, a father-type figure who literally watched us all grow up. The return of Harold Hiken brought back to Timberlane many old time “Timber folk” who thought they had seen their last days as staff. However, to no one’s surprise, when “H” beckoned the staff came running. Staff loyal to a man who in our minds best represents the spirit of our second home, came back to Timberlane.

When Harold took over the camp after two years on the outside, everyone knew he meant business. Then the sly old “H” surprised us all with the mentioning of a returning old timer who had not arrived at camp, yes, Tony Searle (better known as the “Mad Englishman”) was coming “home” for the first time since 1977.

Even after a four year absence, Tony returned with the same exuberance and abundance of energy that was not only earned him his alias, but also our respect as friends and colleagues. Tony has brought back to Timberlane his excitement and expertise in many fields as well as a daring, yet very fitting new hobby, FLYING! The English pilot heads up our scuba and riflery programs and oversees the safety and efficiency of our archery program.

Although his physical appearance has changed slightly, Tony’s character and love for the camp is as strong as ever. All of the staff and campers at camp this year have had a wonderful and exciting summer in the presence of our good friend, “The Mad Englishman”!
