Cruiser Day Highlight
BY JEFF HELLER

Because the opportunity for Cruiser Day comes only once each week, many campers look forward to going out of camp. However, going into town or to Holiday Park are only two aspects of the Cruiser Day experience. There have been several other more interesting alternatives.

Some of these have included traveling to Bond Falls, a waterfall which is located in the northern peninsula of Michigan about 60 miles from camp. Other cabins have gone to Rhinelander to visit the Von Steihl Winery as well as having taken an extensive tour of the television station. An excursion to Crystal Lake is another activity which has been held a lot on Cruiser Days.

However, none of these have even come close to equaling an experience shared among those in Seminole cabin two years ago. During a Cruiser Day this group traveled to the Brule River, which is located approximately 150 miles northwest of camp. The river is situated in a state park area in extreme northwestern Wisconsin. The town of Brule, which is located very close to the river, is only about 30 miles away from the shipping port of Duluth, Minnesota.

Upon arriving at the river site, Seminole cabin had a picnic lunch and then prepared the tube down the Brule River. Tubing is done in large rubber tubes which can be rented in the town. Although the campers were ten and eleven years of age, everyone had an extremely enjoyable time floating down the river in the rubber tubes.

The length of the river that the campers and counselors tubed measures about two miles. There are several spots along the route with rapids, and these interruptions in the river afforded additional excitement to the tube rid. Because of the considerable distance traveled from Timberlane to the Brule River and back, the Cruiser Day program did not end until twilight.

Due to the planning and extra costs involved in taking the trip, availability is always somewhat limited. However, we can look forward to the continuance of these excursions in the future. In fact, members of Sioux cabin have already made plans for the trip on their next Cruiser Day. It will also be combined with a cabin overnight on Tuesday. It is also likely that the P.A. cabin will have their overnight at the Brule River. Camp Timberlane should feel very fortunate to have this elaborate Cruiser Day highlight.
