NEWCOMERS

This year has been marked by an amazing turnover of Timberlane’s staff. The turnover was especially noticeable with the senior counselors. In fact, thirteen of them have never worked at Timberlane until this year. There are a total of 24 senior members on the staff.

Upon arriving at Timberlane for pre-camp, most of the old-timers were initially surprised by the turnover. However, the new counselors fitted in very well with the old staff. Toward the end of pre-camp H complemented the entire staff on their ability to work well together. He also predicted that this year would be an excellent one on the account of the versatility of the new members.

It is also interesting to note many new counselors are heading up their activities. The tripping department experienced a complete turnover this year.

The staff of TIMBERLIFE expressed strong interest in writing a feature article about the new staff. Each member on the staff interviewed a few senior counselors during their own time. Their opinions about coming to Timberlane as well as other limited information was published.

Steve Pratt, a graduate of Indiana University, is working primarily in the Track and Field program this year. He is also helping out a lot in the Athletics department, which has improved very much since last year. Steve was informed about Timberlane by Mark Pearlstein, a staff member who worked in Track and Field last year. Mark also attends Indiana University, and he is a good friend of Steve’s. During the winter Steve contacted Harold and expressed interest in working at Timberlane this summer. Steve is from Indianapolis and plans to pursue Economics as a Business student.

Jeff Roth (he is not the one who is a junior staff member) works in the Ceramics department. Jeff feels that this activity will grow immensely at Timberlane. He has also stated that he has all of the equipment necessary to run a good program. Jeff’s assistants are Joey Pierce and Josh Taxman.

Jeff’s main reason for coming to Timberlane is having the opportunity to further his work. He also likes being in the woods and appreciating all the colors around him. He loves working with kids. He has worked at another camp teaching both swimming and water polo. Jeff lives in St. Louis and thinks that he has a challenging cabin group.l

Jeff was informed about the camp from his cousins, Harry and David Stern. They are both campers here at Timberlane. As a student at Washington University, Jeff has completed three years of study toward his Bachelor of Fine Arts. He is majoring in Ceramics and has had five years experience working with clay.

Another counselor in his first year at TImberlane is Mike Holober, Holober, who lives in New York, learned about camp from senior counselor Mark Abrahams. Working in tripping along with Matt Moynigan and Bob McKay is his main activity. Mike formerly worked at Camp Pontiac, but not as a tripper. Interestingly enough, Mike worked as a swimming instructor, a handy trait for a tripper. But he later became a tripper because of his immense interest in canoeing and backpacking.

Bob McKay is one of the 3 foriegn counselors that are at Timberlane this year. He is working primarily in the tripping department with Mike Holober and Matt Moynigan. When he is not assisting on the canoe trips and overnights, Bob helps out at the riflery range.

Bob found out about Camp Timberlane from an organization called Camp America. The organization is associated with the American Exchange Department. Although Bob has never been to America before, he has done a great deal of traveling and has also done some work in southern France. Bob is from London, England as is Tony Searle, and they travelled overseas together to work at TImberlane.

Heading up the Riflery program this year is Gary Manglesdorf. Gary lives in Califormia and is an honors graduate at Stanford University. Gary works in Riflery with Ed Fried and Tom Wilkin. When he is not at the range, he assists in the Athletic program with Steve Pratt. Although Gary has had no previos camp experience, he became interested when a former staff member, Steve Freidman, told him about camp at Stanford.

Another new and young senior staff member here at Timberlane for the first time is Greg Ehlens. Greg is working in Scuba, Swimming, and Athletics. Other counselors with whom he is working are Jim Myers, Jeff Klien, Tom Wilkin, Ed Fried, Gus Haeuser, Gary Manglesdorf, and Tony Searle. Greg is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota; he had attended another boys camp at the age of thirteen. Greg was informed about Timberlane form Rick Kagen, a friend of his. Rick has been at Timberlane for several years and works primarily in the Riding program.

Our head tripper this year is Matt Moyigan. Matt lives in Marion, Ohio and has had at least fifteen years of eperience in camping before coming to Timberlane. He has done a great deal of backpacking on trails in the Apalachian Mountains. Matt found out about Timberlane from Jeff Roth and decided to come up to the Northwoods and work in tripping. He works with Bob McKay, Mike Holober, and Johnny Meisner.

Another one of the new people at Timberlane is named Tony Searle. Tony along with Bob McKay, lives in England and he found out about camp through the Camp America program. Tony has found out many things since his arrival in America, but by far his favorite new discovery is the A&W Root Beer Float! Tony works in the Scuba deaprtment wiht such people as Gus Haueser and Ed Fried.

Jerry Deutsch is an interesting story. Jerry, who lives in Minlwaukee met Harold and learned about Camp Timberlane as he was doing some part-time work during the winter. Taking over the large responsiblitities of the camp driver from Chip Mann, Jerry is confident and capable.
