Sunday, July 18, would be a most
challenging day to everyone at Timberlane. The day would begin at
four oclock in the morning in preparing the St. Louis boys for
their 6:15 plane out of Rhinelander. The rest of the camp would awake
at 7:45 to eat breakfast and then send off another group to catch a
noon plane.
After this group had left, the first major group of second session
boys would arrive and be welcomed to Timberlane. A few hours later
the final group of first session campers would depart, and another
new group would be welcomed.
In addition to this shuffling in and out of major groups, a few
campers would be arriving by car at different ties throughout the
long and hard day. Staff members would need to be alert to say their
good-byes to the old capers and cheerfully greet the new ones.
About 180 footlockers and duffels would be taken to Rhinelander by
bus, and over 130 more pieces of baggage would be moved into the
cabins.
All second session campers would take their swimming, physical,
scuba, and riding tests. Activities would be explained, and the
sign-up would be held Sunday night. Monday morning the entire camp
would be back on full schedule!
Before this trying weekend these details would be completed. Now all
of them have been successfully completed. The campers were
participating in their activities by ten thirty Monday morning.
Fortunately, this transition period,m and all of the kids were able
to fully enjoy the first section of daily activities.
Because of the four and eight week programs offered at Timberlane,
the changeover of sessions is often the most difficult day for the
entire staff. Few camps in the country offering these programs are
able to rebound to full schedule in a single day. In fact, many of
these camps need two or three days to complete the changeover.
Because of the number of staff at Timberlane and a willingness to put
forth the effort to give the campers a good time, we have proven that
second session is just as enjoyable as first session.
