U.N. AND POW WOW DAYS
The Timberlane Olympics

Of all the events that occur during the summer at Timberlane, probably the two biggest are U.N. (United Nations) and Pow Wow Days. For those of you new to Timberlane, here’s how the two days work. There are four leaders for each of four teams, a junior captain, an intermediate captain, a senior captain & a staff ‘chief.’

The captains sit down and rate all of the campers in athletic ability and skill. The next morning, there is a ‘draft’ with each age division being picked separately. It is incorrect to assume that the best athletes will only be picked first. An example of this is Matt Healy, when he was a camper, Matt, although admittedly not the world's greatest athlete, was always one of the top picks due to his ability in the many "skill" events.

After the campers are done being picked, the teams go on to pick the staff. The staff is used to help write the opening program, and to help put the campers into the right events.

When the big day finally comes around, everyone is emotionally peaked. Songs & Cheers have been repeatedly practiced and team spirit takes it from there.

Each camper takes part in three events (for a listing of the types of events, look on the past score sheets in the lodge), and the fastest campers and staff on each team compete in relay races. the final event of the day is the ‘Tug-O-War’ and in more cases than not, the outcome is still in doubt coming into the Tug. Many times in the past a team leading the entire day has lost it in the Tug, while a last place team has snatched victory from defeat.

Although the winning team does not receive much in a material ‘prize’ for winning; the fun of it, and the pride in having done a good job, is enough to satisfy the victors...as well as the losers.
