The three divisions of All Stars from
Timberlane defeated Camp Algonquin in three out of the four contests
staged July 6th. Timberlane was victorious in the Junior and
Intermediate softball games, as well as an Intermediate basketball
game. Our only loss was suffered in the Senior softball game.
The most exciting event of the entire series was the Intermediate
softball game. Trailing by a score of 9 to nothing, they came back to
win 11 to 10 in eight innings. Though playing against boys about a
year older than themselves, the Intermediates came back behind the
strong hitting of Steve Schachter and Richard Greenwald. After
falling behind by nine runs in the second inning, coaches Stuart
Speer and John Marks rallied their team and eventually tied the score
9-9 in the seventh on Dean Salits clutch base hit. In the top
of the first extra inning, Algonquin jumped ahead again with a single
run. But Timberlane rallied again in the bottom of the frame with two
runs which won the contest. Steve Schachter and Richard Greenwald
homered earlier.
The Juniors, after falling behind early, came back and won going away
25-4. Losing by a score of 3 to 1, Bob Komisar (the coach) pulled
some sort of miracle to win; key hits were by Dan Slavin &
Marshall Berlin. Coach Komisar praised pitcher Mark Enger, calling
him the next Denny McClain. Other standouts were shortstop Jon David
and short-centerfielder BIlly Straus.
The Seniors were not able to overcome the clutch hitting of
Algonquin, and lost their game 10 to 7. Rick Mandel led the Timbers
hitting parade with three triples, though none with men on base. The
highlight of the game was when Gary Silvers was thrown out at home
plate, and performed a front-flip in disgust!
After jumping into the lead 3-0, TImberlane was not able to hold on;
causing Coach Jeff Mossler to pull his hair out in anger.
The Intermediate basketball team won, 10 to 4.
