Monday, July, 31 saw Camp Timberlane
defeat Camp Algonquin in a game of softball played by the Senior
All-Stars. The game was played at Algonquin, and the final score was
7 to 5. Timberlane jumped ahead early, and though Algonquin was never
behind by more than a couple of runs, they were not able to overcome
Timberlanes tough defense.
Winning fielding honors were third baseman Steve Schachter and
shortstop Rick Mandel. Both made several outstanding plays to put out
Algonquin rallies with clutch fielding. More than once Steve
Schachter had to tag a man twice his size coming towards him. Mandel,
called "The Vacuum Cleaner", was making great fielding gems, one
after another.
Hitting stars included Joey Pierce, who had a couple of hits and two
rbis; and Dave Levering. Timberlane would have had more runs,
had it not been for two double plays and several other spectacular
plays by the Algonquin fielders.
The Senior All-Stars are now 1-1 against Algonquin this summer,
having lost a previous game played first session. The week prior to
the seniors game, both the intermediate and junior teams won
hard-fought games. The intermediates and the juniors are both 2-0
this year.
Senior All-Star coaches Ed Fried and Jeff Mossler feel the key to
their teams success last week was the key hitting which was not
prevalent in the earlier loss. Fried was particularly referring to
the many runners that were left on base.
