Wow....what a show at Alpine!! I can't believe Andy and I ran
into so many Timber-folks.... must of seen 6-8 people I

Damn.....all of these Timber-folks at this concert and I wasn't
there. Pud must be traveling cause I know he had tickets and I
was wondering if any of you guys saw him there? Gazzoo, didn't

Alpine stuff
Whatta weekend! I'm still recovering. Pud had said it was too
big a hassle, and I didn't have the energy to talk him into it.
Everyone was asking where he was, like I'm his keeper or
something.
Saw the following Timber alums...Mark and Andy Bleiden, Pete
Korro, Andy Schiller, and MP. Callahan's buddy was there too, I
forget his name. Stayed at Lake Lawn Lodge in Lake Geneva, very
cool place. Like MP said in his earlier post, it was laid back
like the Dead shows in the early 80's.

Bleed at Alpine
spoke with Mark Blieden tonight. He was positively effusive
about how great it was to see everyone. I don't know how Andy
talked him into going...I didn't think he was into the Dead
enough!

My response to Meadow is:
If Rosy hasn't cared about us for these past years, why should
we care about him or his site.
I have some great cereal box art on top of my fridge also.
Yeah Rosy....I'm talking to you....you heard me...watcha gonna
do about it?

SHOWS
Unbeknownst to any Timber-folk who went to last weekend's shows
at Alpine, I was there. Where the hell were any of you? Gazzoo,
the technology with internet/cellular is quite phenomenol. I
was actually chatting with you from a backstage location on a
regular computer/dial-up. Yes, the passes came from a friend
named 'Bob Weir.'
MOST IMPORTANT...Did any of you go into the "Listening Tent"
that was in the far rear-left parking area (as you're walking
towards the theatre)? Never had seen anything like that at any
show. Bootlegger's paradise, indeed.
I didn't come across any Timber-folk, but had one helluva good
time.

When Jerry Died I Was ....
....in my apartment in Milwaukee. A buddy from high school,
with whom I went to my first "show" (Jerry Garcia Band,
Chicago, 1983), called me from his place of employment to break
the news. I didn't believe him, or maybe I didn't want to
believe him. Anyway, like Moss, listed to Dead stuff for
days.

I was in my plush corporate home office set-up (feet up on my
work station) when Joey called me with the news. As is the case
99% of the time, I thought he was full of hot air. He still is.
I made him immediately fax me the Bloomberg wire story.
Somehow, while he's from Memphis and kinda' slow, he
successfully managed to print it out and fax it. Since I wasn't
out in the field that day, I played bootlegs, fielded and made
a lot of phone calls with some of yous' guys, and recorded
various TV transmissions most of the day. My old man called me
around 4:30 P.M. He never fully understood the scene, but knew
how important it was to me. He was rather impressed that NPR's
"All Things Considered" devoted a full 20 minutes to Jerry and
the Grateful Dead that day. The following couple nights I lived
via lots of candlelight, listening to a lot of great music that
touched my life and reflected upon all the awesome times (that
I could sometimes remember) I spent with a lot of "yous' guyz."

August 9, 1995
I was in Chicago (having only recently attended the final two
Dead Shows) and spent the evening with Jon Healy and his wife
Anita at Buckingham Fountain. There was a large gathering with
flowers, candles, folks sitting around playing Dead songs on
the guitar, etc. It was quite an evening.

Up North
I just returned from a beautiful couple a day' up in the North
Woods. Visited Timberlane and told a few stories, visited old
friends, had THE BEST Blue Bayou meal since Walter passed (the
blackened Scallops are far and away the best seafood dish I've
ever eaten - this from a man who has lived on the Pacific coast
for 13 years now). All told it was my 25th straight summer
visiting northern Wisconsin and 19th stright to include a meal
at the Blue Bayou, both numbers I'd love to see increase as the
years go on. Timberlane was rockin solid this summer, great
staff, happy campers ... unfortunately though food that only
Dorthy would have liked (it started more than a few boom
booms)! And I thought of that great weekend we spent up there
two summers ago and kept ya'll in my key log thoughts and
prayers!

I had just finished playing another hoax on Pud when I got a
call from my friend Marty Kessler, who had contacts inside the
Dead's organization. He told me that Jerry was retiring to
become a jockey. So I called JP and told him to tell Pud that
Jerry had died. I then printed up a few fake newspapers and
edited together a video which I played thru Pud's cable. Marty
told the people at GDP what I was doing, and they thought it
was a hoot..."what can we do to get in on this?" they asked,
and I told them to whiz up some controversies concerning
Jerry's ashes and guitars. Then one night I get a call from an
incensed Vince Welnick who found no humor in it at all. He
screamed "I'm frickin not going to be part of this anymore!" to
which I replied "You were never part of this to start
with".
Then a few months ago, Jerry decided to come back. So I called
Dennis McNally and begged him not let them tour, he said he
couldn't do that but eventually agreed to not publisize Jerry's
return. Finally it was up to me to make sure Pud didn't go to
the shows...which turned out to be much easier than I
anticipated.
Here then, is an unretouched photo from last weekend...

flying tie-dye banners, heard "Ripple" on the radio, and
guessed the bad news (I knew he'd been in the
hospital).

Greetings directly from H's computer set-up. The old H took my

really takes a return visit to make you remember just how
beautiful it is. Sorry youse guys are not here to enjoy it with

I love going up north
Just came back from the Northwoods--weather was absolutely
perfect!! Last night, I hit the town with Billy, Bobbo and
Eddo. Nothing but laughs the whole night. Bobbo and Eddo are
talking about a road trip to seek out old Timber-folks--but
only the obscure ones. Nothing maistream. I suggested Frog
Fargenstein and Bill Zurlo as potential stops. I think they are
open to suggestions.

A Loss in the Timberfamily...
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Gorchoff and
Schlossberg families on the passing of Albert Gorchoff last
Sunday at the age of 77. He had been near death last fall, but
thanks to modern medicine, recovered suffuciently to enjoy a
number of quality months.
I'll always remember Albert for rolling into Parents Weekend in
a huge Winnebago.
