Cheers to 40 years
Hello to all my pals in Timberzone. I'd like to say first of
all that Pete Koro (myself) and the Wino brothers were deeply
grieved that we could not attend the reunion, although I think
we would have barely made the cut. Hey Gazzoo, how about some
pictures from this century. Just kiddin'... keep up the good
work buddy .Glad somebody stepped up and put somthing cool
together like this, you rule. Also, I believe I understand the
significance of the dates anyway, since I couldn't be up north
guyz, I thought I would drop a line and give my regards, and
notify everyone of the first annual ATA tourney August ,

Reunion Revisited
What an amazing weekend, like stepping into a time warp.
Highlights of the weekend for me were, playing disc with Peter,
playing basketball for the first time in years..running the
loop again, looking at the stars and oh yes punking Donny in
Softball...yes Donny the first game did count!... 9-8 old guys
with MP hitting the walkoff homer in the bottom of the last
inning. What a great time! The only thing I won't miss is
sleeping in a bunk bed and the camp bathrooms!

Timbereunion-what else?
One of the most abused and misused words in today's common
vernacular is "wonderful". In the last month, I have heard
people describe everything from coffee to a pair of socks as
"wonderful". When I think of something as wonderful, I think of
"...that which is full of wonder..." Ole Mr. Webster kinda said
it better; "wonder is defined as (a) exciting amazement or
admiration and (b) effective or efficient beyond anything
previously known or anticipated." I guess I am kind of wacky
but I just have a hard time thinking of toilet paper as
"wonderful." It is a pity because when we need the right word
e.g. wonderful, its impact is diluted by the people who
describe their last dump as "wonderful". Contraty to the above
babbling, I am not here to give a semantics lesson or cast
aspersions on the misuse of words. Rather, I wish to drive home
the point that this past weekend was indeed, wonderful. I could
not have anticipated the feelings, emotions, memories, comfort
and laughs I enjoyed this weekend. I tried to explain to my
partner today at lunch what I did this weekend, and true to my
keylog words-nobody but us gets it. We are so blessed to have
experienced Timberlane and this past weekend screams our good
fortune at the top of its metaphorical lungs. Thank you all,
not only for this past weekend, but the years during, since,
and yet to come, of our lifelong path.

Aspersions...
Pud's not really as callous as portrayed by the above and
believe the vast majority of you (including Mr. Handmaker
because he IS the best) were copied on my e-mail regarding the
weekend. As for such "aspersions" (great word, Bobby), they
were very much casted and duly comprehended in a very jocular
way.

Too Quiet Down Here
I have to say that after 13 years at Timberlane, 2 at private
school, 4 at military academy and 2 with college roommates,
this weekend I experienced the loudest snoring I have ever
heard in my entire life...the cabin sounded like a lumber mill.
It was as if I were in a cave full of slumbering Neanderthals.
And yet, with all the buzzsaws, the wet sandy floors, the
pulled muscles, the earful of lake water from my 0.000002sec
barefoot run, the sore throat, the frigid nights &
mornings, the two hyper extended fingers from TushballÆ,
PK's foofkies in the car the whole way up, my soaked traveling
shoes after collapsing one of Billy's docks at Agawak along
with Pete, Josh & Bobbo, and the mosquito that flew up my
nostril and never getting a confirmation that I blew it back
out...... I'd head back up there in a heartbeat and do it all
over again.
Camp was a beautiful and fun place to grow up, but it was all
of you that made my years there so 'wonderful'
Thanks.
I hope you all had at least half as much fun as the dogs
did.
I must go now, as I will be editing video until the next
reunion.

when I'm leaving." I just feel grateful.. grateful grateful

This weekend was definitely one to remember, you guys are the
greatest. My highlights were hangin with the boys between 1:22
and 1:24, Ed and Jeff Moss re-acquainting Pud to the nail.
Also, Dean and Harry's rampage through camp at 2:00am at which
time Bino's bed was short-sheeted (while he was sleeping). And
finally, finding a dejected and broke Peter Kaufman and helping
him back to the top. Jeff Mossler, ask your brother who won the
REAL game. By the way Koro, Ross is a non-factor in tush. Hope
to stay in touch with everyone. Let me know if anyone is out in

It was great seeing everyone this weekend, and I would be more

local folks whenever possible (Raskin, Gold and I are
definitely going to call you on your offer). Let's not wait 10
years for another reunion. Also, we may have a first here, if
Bino and I end up hammering out a business deal that started on
the Camp Timberlane athletic field. Finally, fellow Timber-Alum
Wayne Hoffman sends along a Hip-Zu to everyone, and told me
about a great story he heard on NPR last week. It was a guy
talking about how we basically need to abolish schools, since
everything he learned of any value in life, and everything that
made him into the man he is happened at camp. After this past
weekend, I concur.

Guys, this past weekend we raised a terrific amount of money to
send kids to real camps like ours. In case you didn't make a
donation, are interested in making another, or want to tell

This program sends kids who would not otherwise be able to
attend to independent, private camps. I know everyone has a lot
of organizations asking them for money, but this program sure
strikes close to home for me. If you do donate (or donate
again) please mention that you have an affiliation with

hamstring...right Komisar, Randy, Bruce!!? Or, my shooting
hand, right Steve Lebau! Can't tell you how much fun I had. The

admit to the world that he still laughs at farts. Good example

The Keylog I didn't have the guts to throw....
Picture it: 1978...a little pipsqueak..imagine a female version
of Pud, Gazzoo with the barefoot wildness of Callahan...living
in Connecticut. My father...a well known Nuclear Physicist
(went to Harvard) died when I was 3...leaving behind the 4 of
us to live in an affulent community (SNOTS!). I was the baby of
the family...and 7 years behind the next. One of the first
songs on piano that I ever wrote was entitled "SUMMER CAMP". It
was an instrumental. I wanted to go to camp so badly...I sent
for brochures; but I needed to work, so I took on 2 paper
routes to pay for eggs and Mac & Cheese. I started my own
summer camp and even scheduled swimming (our block owned a
beach on the ocean), I started my own newspaper and produced
variety shows every week and had an arts and craft sale too.
Hell, I could have my own 25th reunion, but there were only 6
campers! Another girl on the block went to 4-H camp...I was SO
jealous. My mom was worried about me, I talked about it so
much. We just couldn't afford it...Well, I grew up and moved to
Chicago and met my precious Gazzoo. We went to visit H in
Minocqua in 1992. I thought he was the coolest person. We went
to Agawak and I fell in love. I wanted to work there but I just
didn't have the experience. I later told H of my summer camp
wishes and he told me that I was an honorary camper. He later
said at our wedding that I was a person who probably wanted to
go to camp more than some actual campers he had known. I care
about the memories of Camp Timberlane because it makes Gazzoo
so happy. And it's also my way of having some kind of camp
history of my own. He has selective memory....he doesn't
remember grammar school, high school or even past girlfriends,
but he remembers camp like it was yesterday!! If I had a time
travel machine I would go back and befriend Dorothy Herlitz or
Nano or a Hiken sister and hang out at camp...but since I
don't...the next best thing is keeping the memories alive for
all those lucky enough to have them. Timberlane is special, and
it's the people that make it that way. I can say as a wife, who
sneaked a peek at the camp reunion...that I saw a lot of little
boys (30-50 year olds). I've seen many of them outside of camp
(some at our wedding) but the minute they were back at camp,
they were just like little kids again. We have H and the entire
Hiken family and staff to thank for making our little boys into
the men we love...but more than that...the camp memories KEEP
them the little boys we STILL love! Although I saw some mopey
faces because a lot of the little boys missed their little
girls (the wives!). I would like to thank everyone who gave me
big hugs and would like you to know how much and WHY it meant a
lot to me to take even a little glimpse, to chissle a crack in
the ice...to see what camp must have been like, and my little
girl inside of me finally got to go to camp and make lifelong
friends (Well, Gazzoo is definately my soulmate!). Seeing
people at camp was important to me and important to this web
site. It will make it easier for me to identify people, and IT
WILL MAKE IT EASIER to pour my heart into this project. You
just can't describe what Matt Healy, Fred Bierman or Ed Fried
are really like in person. Plus, people I've known for years
changed at camp this weekend...(I knew 35 people going IN to
the reunion) I've seen JP a million times but it was so neat to
see him with his counselors and his campers! PUD, who was our
best man, looked like he was actually enjoying old pranks
(admit it, Pud!)...and the best was seeing my Gazzoo. I've
known Gazzoo for OVER 13 YEARS now! I won't call him Bob Gassel
now because I saw GAZZOO...he was in his true element. And I
want you all to know that Bob Gassel keeps GAZZOO with him
every moment of the day. He is my best friend and I have
Timberlane to thank for making him who he is. EVERYTHING he did
at camp made him the person who appreciates me....and it's
great because now I get to go to camp every day...here in our
house. And that's my keylog! Now maybe you can understand my
passion for sneaking a peek at camp this weekend...it was now
or never. Thanks for helping to make a little girl's dream come
true.... Love,

To my Timber Brothers
Wow--That was a party--Timber Style. My family could not keep
me quiet. The 4-day party still rings in my mind. Special
thanks to Ed and Bobbo. Our party started 4 hours before we got
to camp as we left Pick N Save in Brookfield when Bobbo didn't
have enough money and had to ask 2 beautiful ladies behind us
for some change. Seems like just yesterday when Bobbo had to
call H from Wausau because he did not have H's credit card to
put gas in the car. Sorry H, but these women were much better
looking. Special mention goes out to our wounded brothers.
Bobbo, you just had to go backwards. Slalom barefoot wasn't
good enough. I will say, it did look pretty impressive seeing a
40+, slightly bald, PHD footing on Lake Towanda. Bobby
Komisar--How was that drive home? Get out the Ben Gay. Steve
Lebau-- Looked good for a while on the hoops court. That cast
was just a fake, right? You knew baseball was in the cards and
you didn't want to relive those camp memories. To all the rest
of my Timber family-- a big Hip-Zoo to all. Glad to know that
after 20 years away from camp, you still remember that last
lines of the cheer. Barry

The Next Reunion
The overwhelming sentiment I felt while leaving camp has been
echoed by everyone I've spoken to..."I don't want to wait ten
years to see everyone again". Well, we can't go to camp
whenever we please (MP notwithstanding), but WE CAN do the next
best thing. In the spirit of "Camp Heinous", I propose that the
midwest contingent hold an annual event. Several ideas pop to
mind; a ballgame at Wrigley one year, a picnic in Milwaukee the
next. But the one that seems the best to me is a Super Bowl
party...we rent out a room and get together every Super Sunday
(another option is to do this for a Packer-Bear game). I'm
willing to organize this shindig, but I need to know how many
would be interested. I think we would need at least 25 people
to make it feasible. There are other questions...should it be
in Milwaukee or Chicago? Should spouces be invited? Should Pud
be invited? Anyhow, mull it over and let me know what you think
either here or by e-mail. If I get enough response, I'll try
and put something together.
