tremendous amount of hair in our younger days; however, our

Foster Becker: Hell Night From Heaven
- Foster Becker was the CIT in Apache my first year of 1971.
I recall vividly as he conducted the first "Hell Night" I ever
experienced. Awakened by small rocks thrown at us, we were
ordered outside the cabin. We then had to run full-speed laps
around Apache (in only our underpants) as Foster and Blake
Bursten threw stones and sticks at us from the roof. We were
brought back into the cabin, blindfolded, and told to sit on
our bunks. They came around to each of us and held two water
pitchers over our head, one filled and the other supposedly
empty. We had to correctly guess which was empty or get doused
with the coldest water you could imagine. I seem to recall that
BOTH pitchers were filled most of the time...either that or
they just said "Fuck this!" and poured water on us even when we
guessed correctly. The few of us who had gotten off dry were
then hung on the Grundy nail and doused there. We were then
ordered to dry off and put on our warmest clothes (sweatshirts,
jeans, etc.)...then we were led down to the ski dock and forced
to throw each other in the lake.
It was the best night I ever had at camp...

He pulled a knife on me in the Menomonee counselor room in

camper money (a few years later, as many know, he was busted at

Intro To Timberlane
- Okay, time to rev this puppy up again...
Let's hear each of your stories about how you first heard about
Timberlane, and whether it was YOUR decision to go.
Here's my tale...in 1970 I was living in Miami and attended
Camp Blue Star in
Hendersonville, North Carolina. It was a huge coed camp with
well over 1000 campers (one of which just happened to be a
young Lonnie Lazar); and I don't recall leaving the campgrounds
the entire 4 weeks I was there. Anyhow, I had a great time and
was hoping to go back the following year. That winter my family
moved to Skokie (I had grown up in nearby Lincolnwood, and had
lived in Miami for just 2 years). I soon became close friends
with Peter Kaufman and Wally Posner, both of whom lived in the
same apartment building as me. Pete, I found out, had also gone
to camp...at this relatively small one in Wisconsin named
Timberlane. When I mentioned this to my folks, they told me
that they had friends whose kids also went there...the
Chapman's (Todd) and the Ash's (David and Barry). A few weeks
later, this guy in checkered pants and a bad toupee comes with
a projector to show me and Wally the film. I watched and
thought "this is okay...nothing special". Then all of a sudden,
I see a RADIO STATION...right in camp! Not only that, but kids
get to be deejays!
...Cut to thirty years later, and you're reading
TUSHBALL.COM...

1ST. YEAR CAMPER
- It was 1967 and my neighbor across the street, Jimmy
Kutten, told my family about a great place to get away to from
St. Louis. HH was going to be at Andy Mintz's house with a
short film about a special place. I was impressed that a kid
could waterski daily and shoot a '22 daily if he desired. So
off I went on the big bus trip! Little did I know that the trip
would include some insane people like: F. Becker, D.
Goldehersh, K.Salky, Kutten and others. All I remember is the
poker game, illegal fireworks, and rowdy ass Ladue high
schoolers. My first-year cabin counselors were Heilbronner,
Plotkin and someone I can't remember. Anyway, Blackfoot cabin
with Todd Chapman et al. Sammy Elman, the fart king, was my
bunkmate. I had way too many sausage links the day before we
were leaving for home early a.m. and Elman's foot locker was
packed under the lower bunk with the lid open and pushed out
just enough to catch the extreme hurl/sausage/grease all over
the packed/clean clothes. Other memories include soaking 2
rolls of kybo paper in the toilet, propping open the screen
door in Blackfoot, and letting them fly at Plotkin up the
stairs and plastering him to the back wall right in the face as
he got up in the morning and slid the staff room door open.
1000 arm smashes were given over the last 5 days of camp to
both arms. Great memories!!

1970/Woodruff-bound.
- Writing from Terre Haute, IN and drove past Timothy McVey
today. Our family was informed about Timberlane by the Hokin
family (formerly of Peoria). Julie, Allison and Stephi Hokin
(gorgeous Jewish queens in their own right) all went to
Chippewa Ranch. Son-Michael (brother Neil's best friend at the
time) was probably not wild enough for Timberlane. He went to
Kawaga. His mom apparently didn't ever come to realize the
geographic or cultural diversity of Timberlane, although the
Pud family recruited some 15 Peoria families in the mid 1970s.
The 7 hr. bustrip my 1st yr. was unreal--malted milk ball
fights, David Daskal barfing, BOTH Leifer Brothers causing
havoc, and the bus driver pulling over numerous times to regain
control over his bus. At that point, I had no doubt that I made
the right decision. This was FUN!! I cried when parents told H
they wanted their Pudrick home after 4 weeks in 1970; H cried

that H called and was able to fit us into his busy schedule,
NOW! As all of you with small children and pregnant wives know,
NOW is not always convenient, however for the ol' HH, NOW
always works. We had a great visit with H and Sharon and H gave
Sophie a cassette tape he custom made for her at bedtime. Since
that time, all she wants to listen to is "HH." The next day,
Sabrina and I attended a wedding, and ducked out early. We were
traveling north on Swan, a road we rarely travel. Sabrina
commented that although she loves H as much as the rest of us,
she does not know how she will be able to listen to that tape
on an hourly basis. At that moment, we drove past a car broken
down on the side of the road, and much to our surprise, it was
H, Sharon and their friends. The hood of the car was open, and
they each had a phillips screwdriver and duct tape in their
hands. I made a quick U-turn, and as we waited at the
intersection, I yelled a "HEY--Harold Hiken." He had a serious,
but relieved look on his face, and said, "come here, come here,
come here" I told H that as soon as the light turned green, I
planned to pull over. He continued to tell me to "come here"
until I finally had the green arrow. We were happy to give them
a ride to their friends house, and as I dropped them off, H
asked if I could give them a ride to the airport the next day.
I told him OK, BUT IT WILL COST YOU. The next day as I was
driving them to the airport I explained to them that "random
Timber-run-ins" was a recent topic on the board. Sharon told me
that it was unbelievable that we happen to drive by because the
tow truck only seats 3, and H would have had to hitch-hike
back.
