Timber Life Lesson
I haven't put up many posts since I first found out about the
web site earlier this year, but I've enjoyed reading most of
the posts. Some of the stuff I've read is hilarious and brings
back wonderful memories. But with some of the recent posts
getting a bit acrimonious, I figured I'd try my hand at one of
my classic Timber memories.
It was the middle of the summer of 79, high stress in the
riding stables, and a few other things on my mind that summer
so I needed to blow off some steam. I'm in a camp car
(Oldsmobile station wagon - is it even made anymore?) near
Arbor Vitae or Eagle River with 2 other guys. I think Phil
Perlson was with me but I can't be sure (I'm also not the
driver, but lost brain cells or age prevents me from
remembering who the mystery 3rd person was that was driving).
Anyway, we picked up a couple of 6 packs of the Northern brew
(Old Style) and packed it in the cooler in the back seat. As
usual, we also had quite a bit of herbage flowing around the
car that day and were having a blast driving around the back
roads of the Northwoods. Now at that time, I was still living
in Dallas, Texas and in Texas at that time, believe it or not,
you could drink and drive. By the way if I remember correctly,
in 1979 in Texas, you could drink and drive, you could shoot a
gun and drive, but you couldn't drive, drive, and shoot a gun
all at the same time. I'm 19 years old and it never occurred to
me that I couldn't drink in a car all over the world like I
could in Texas. Well, we're cranking out a hell of a time down
the back roads of the northern woods and I'm drinking my beer
without even trying to hide to conceal it when the lights and
siren come on behind us and we get pulled over. Whoever was
driving the car convinced me take their beer and say it was
mine since they'd loose their license if they got caught
drinking and driving. I'm saying what the hell for, we do that
in Texas all the time! So I took the beer, chugged down my own
and spilled it all over the floor of the car, and we're
stashing the herbs all at the same time. It was a Vilas County
Sheriff and he orders us out of the car. He starts searching
the car and pulls forward the front passenger seat where I was
sitting and looks behind and says to us "Looks like you boys
spilled some of your pop." Well we thought he said pot instead
of pop and started freaking out with wide eyes staring at each
other thinking Oh shit, we're dead! Well the next thing you
know he's dumping out the cooler and pointing to me saying he
saw me pour my beer on the floor and that he was going to dump
out the rest of our pop from the cooler and we realized it
wasn't pot he'd found after all. Man, we all almost fainted
from relief on the spot. The sheriff explains to my amazment
that he's writing me ticket for drinking an intoxicant in a
motor vehicle and I actually had the stupidity or nievity to
explain to him that back in Texas, this wasn't a problem. At
that point he threatens me with jail but somehow he decided not
to arrest me. I figured the worst was over at this point when
who should drive by but Sharon Hiken. What are the odds that a
Vilas County Sheriff and Sharon Hiken would be driving around
the back woods just where I had happened to be on my day off?
My day now sunk to a new level. As she drove by, someone in her
car (I don't know if it was her or not) yelled out "Bust them
all!" and kept on driving. I ended up with a $64 ticket but the
thing I'll always remember about the incident is not the bust
or the worry about the pot or the Sheriff threatening me with
hauling me off to jail. It was the look in Sharon's eyes as she
drove past us. In hindsight, that was my summer of unruly
behavior and I deserved the eye from Sharon. It was a pretty
rude awakening for me and helped start to turn me around for
the rest of the summer. Of course I didn't drink any less, but
at least that was the last time I drank on the road.
