Athletics Keeps Campers Sliding, Offers New, Creative Ideas
by Lonnie Lazar

Crack! It’s a fly ball to right and another day of Athletics is underway. This activity has come a long way in the past few years, with the addition of new and exciting games such as Ultimate Frisbee last year and European Handball four years ago.

Ultimate Frisbee has really caught on with the campers. It entails flipping the Frisbee down a field much like a football or soccer field, and over the goal line.

Advisors Steve Friedman and Gary Oglander have in mind more great games such as Boff Sticks and Golf Frisbee. The Boff Sticks are low styrofoam sticks that come with head gear, and the object of the game is to beat the other player to a pulp. Of course, no one really gets hurt, it hasn’t been introduced yet because “the timid players might feel pressure to play the game,” according to Friedman.

“I might bring up a couple pairs (of Boff Sticks) next year if I come up, but that depends of course on school and maybe some travel,” Friedman added.

H.H. introduced European Handball to Steve and Gary about four years ago and Steve learned about “Ultimate”, as the game is affectionately called by the campers, at Tufts College in Boston, where the Frisbee competition was originated and an Ultimate team now plays.

No athletic department can be complete without assistants. First session Steve Lebau and Alan Kline helped out so much and second session John Marks is working, along with Bob Gassel who assists full time.

“Those guys are great -- always ready, never complaining,” said Steve, “And Rocky adds a flash of color and brilliance to the program. Of course, periodic field trips to Tastee keep the kids happy.”
