Last Tuesday afternoon in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd, a
group of campers defending the glory of Indiana University lost to a
group of counselors defending Marquette University by a score of
30-22.
The campers used the same line-up as they did in their first staff
game. Starters were Frank Sterneck and Stu Cohn at guard, Mike Levitt
and Dan Aron at forward, and Greg Echt at center. Jeff Mossler was
the campers substitute.
The Milwaukee J.C.s went with Tony Heuser at center, Doug
McIver and Bart (one of the kitchen boys) at forward, and Rick Mandel
and Ed Fried in the backcourt.
Coaches of the Milwaukee team were Little Jimmy Kerns and Big Barry
Schulman.
Bob Heilbronner was supposed to start for the J.C.s until he
sprained his ankle two days before the game.
Spirits rose for the game as a group of Partial P.A.s (Program
Aides) made and flew a banner bearing I.U. over the camp. The
Partials spent all afternoon Sunday working on the flag and late
into Sunday night. Bruce Berman and Dan Aron snuck out and rose the
flag.
It was very hot Tuesday afternoon as game-time drew nearer. This
reporter sat and watched the two teams practice. The campers hardly
missed any shots. With me watching warm-ups was Gary Oglander, one of
the key men in the Athletic and Basketball programs at Timberlane. I
asked him who he favored and why. He told me he picked the campers
because of the superior Timberlane Basketball program the campers had
experienced.
As the game began, a group from Cheyenne cabin dressed as Marquette
Warriors. The game opened with Mike Levitt hitting a jumper, throwing
the campers into a 1-0 lead. The teams exchanged score until Frank
Sterneck scored two straight baskets, giving the campers a 4-2 lead.
Ed Fried scored two in a row, tying it up at 4 a piece
The two men on the court were hot for the first half, and at the
break in the action, the campers for I.U. led only barely, the score
being 15-13.
But the second half told the story. Beginning quite like first half,
both the counselors and the campers hit buckets and the score became
20-20. Then, the campers tired. Stu Cohen hit one, but after that the
counselors scored 10 out of the last 11 points to make the fianl
score 30-22. it was as if after the game broke open, the campers
couldn't even buy a basket.
Stu Cohen scored 7 to lead the campers, while Ed Fried and Doug
"Meatcleaver" McIver scored 9 and 8 respectively to lead the
counselors
The game was the result of a growing Indiana-Marquette rivalry.
Hardly a meal would go by without hearing a Go- I.U.-
FIGHT! or a counter by the Marquette fans such as Indiana
stinks, Indiana stinks.
The counselors originally challenged the campers, putting up malts
for the winning team. The campers quickly accepted. But even higher
stakes were placed on the game. If the campers lost, Greg Echt would
suffer the ultimate defeat- singing
the Marquette fight song over the P.A.
Scott Geffen served to make the game more interesting. Scott, a
student at I.U., said he would SACRIFICE HIS BODY TO HIS ALMA
MATER. if the campers lost, he also promised to be syrupped and
feathered with an I.U. t-shirt on. Also, he promised to do something
only done on his grandmothers 79th birthday, shave off his
moustache.
The game was postponed from Monday to Tuesday because of the late
arrival of the Porcupine Mountain Backpacking trip. Jeff Mossler,
Frank Sterneck, and Mike Levitt were team members on the trip.
